Dinner in Oakland at Homeroom
On the last post, we ended up at Union Square in San Francisco, ready to take the BART back to Oakland.Because it was getting late, my friend and I decided to have dinner in Oakland, enjoying some simple take-out food.
I'd read about Homeroom quite some time ago on gastronomyblog and have been waiting for a good opportunity to try it.
They offer quite a selection of flavors, with add-ins to suit every tastes, and also serve house made side dishes, desserts, root beer and beer floats.
Case in point is the above Trailer Mac, cheddary mac with slices of Niman Ranch hot dog and topped with crushed potato chips.
Very creative and it reaches the perfect balance of cheesiness to having some bite. It's not just a gloopy gut bomb as many mac and cheeses tend to be.
The class room setting brings even more charm to the place. The file cabinet contains customer loyalty cards, alphabetized.
Even though we called minutes before closing, they provided friendly service at the counter. I enjoyed the overhead chalk board strip indicating "...B is for beer, C is for cheese".
The plant wall, chalkboard, classroom tables and chairs as well as the lunch box planters add plenty of school charm to the charming restaurant.
We gilded the lily further with buttery bread crumbs, sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions add-ins.
And just to add some green to the decadent meal, we got a side of their roasted brussels sprouts, topped with bacon (optional) and apple cider vinegar. I love brussels sprouts as is, but enjoyed the tangy vinegar addition.
Overall, it was nice to discover and hit up some unique spots on this trip.
Oh, Homeroom. It's so cozy there! Glad you enjoyed it :)
It definitely was a comforting meal after walking all through SF all day.
